As a teacher’s college, New Jersey City University in Jersey City was founded in 1929. 41 undergraduate degrees, 27 master’s degrees and two doctoral degrees are currently offered by the university. 90 percent of full-time starting undergraduates receive financial assistance, with 9 percent earning institutional grants or scholarships.

For merit-based scholarships, including the full-tuition Presidential Scholarship, the $6,000 University VI Scholarship and the $5,000 University V Scholarship, incoming freshmen are immediately considered. Transfer students are eligible, ranging from full-tuition to $2,000, for identical merit-based awards.

Music and Art Scholarships, which include grants of up to $3,000, are available for students studying music or art. The school also grants annually to continuing students more than 300 scholarships from the NJCU Foundation.

4. Stockton University

The Catholic School Award ($18,000/year) may be available for freshmen who graduate from Catholic high schools. To help cover the on-campus housing expense of a nominee, awards from the Magis Residential Awards for Freshmen are given.

The largest public university in New Jersey, Kean University in Union, New Jersey, offers more than 48 undergraduate and 35 graduate programs. 14 percent of full-time starting undergraduates are compensated with academic assistance, with students earning an average institutional grant of $2,649.

Five merit scholarships are immediately considered for incoming freshmen: the full-tuition William Livingston Scholarship, the $4,000 Kean Scholarship, the $3,000 Trustee Scholarship, the $2,500 Presidential Scholarship and the $2,000 Scholarship for Academic Merit.

For all related scholarship awards, including the National Merit Scholarship, which covers tuition, fees, room and board for National Merit Finalists, and the Honors Merit Award, which covers tuition, fees, room and board for students accepted into the Honors College of the university, students are automatically considered. For Faculty Scholarships, which include awards ranging from $5,000 to $9,700 a year, academically outstanding freshmen are also eligible.

8. William Paterson University of New Jersey

Wayne, New Jersey

William Paterson University, located in Wayne, New Jersey, 20 miles from New York City, offers graduate and undergraduate degrees through its Arts and Communication, Business, Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Science and Health colleges.

The university grants merit scholarships that, beyond an acceptance application, do not require a separate application. For the William Paterson University Trustee Scholarship, which ranges from $1,000 to $6,000 a year and is renewable for up to four years, incoming freshmen are eligible.

Transfer students will receive $1,000 to $2,000 a year and renewable for up to four semesters. This is the Presidential award. Scholarships for transfer students who are members of Phi Theta Kappa or who participate in the Honours College are also available.

9. College of Saint Elizabeth

Morristown, New Jersey

The College of Saint Elizabeth in Morristown, New Jersey, established in 1899, is the oldest women’s college in New Jersey and the first Catholic college in the U.S. to award degrees to women for four years. Most students, with 90% of undergraduates receiving assistance from institutional, state, federal or private sources, can expect to receive some aid. The typical full-time student just starting should expect more than $33,000 in funding that does not need to be repaid to be received. For instance, the school’s Presidential Scholarship provides academically excellent incoming students with full tuition. Several tuition discounts are also provided by the college, including discounts for students older than 62, students with law enforcement or armed forces careers and students who are registered nurses.
