Tuition fees

International Students are not to pay Tuition fees. However, from autumn 2017 tuition fees will be required on some courses for non-European candidates. International students at the Doctoral level will still be on free tuition.

Undergraduate Entry Requirements/First cycle studies (bachelor’s)

International students must be eligible for higher education studies in their home country before thinking of studying abroad in Finland. That said, he/she must possess a valid secondary/high school certificate.

Also, an individual needs to prove his/her proficiency in English as this is the language for instructions in Finland. This can be done by showing language proficiency test result accepted in Finland.

Postgraduate Entry Requirements/Second cycle studies (master’s)

For international students applying for master’s program at any university in Finland,

  • A relevant bachelor’s or equivalent degree diploma

Doctorate Entry Requirements/Third cycle studies (PhD)

Also, students applying for Doctoral studies in Finland have to be in possession of

  • A relevant bachelor’s or equivalent degree diploma

Language requirements for studies at universities in Finland

English language requirements;

EU students

EU student may be exempted from the English language test at the majority of polytechnics and universities in Finland as long as they provide a certificate of their language skills.

Non-EU students

You will need to prove your English language skills with one of the following English test results if your previous studies was not in English or you are not from a country that is in the EEA/EU region

  • IELTS: a minimum score of 5,5
  • TOEFL: score 550 paper-based test/ 213 computer-based/ 79-80 Internet-based test

The Finnish Matriculation Examination

In Finland, students often take an examination after the completion of their upper secondary studies. This exam is known as “Matriculation Examination”. The essence of this exam is to check the level of maturity and knowledge of students. When passing the Matriculation Examination, students are able to apply for higher education studies.

Cost of Living

The Cost of living in Finland is low and affordable when compared to other European countries.
