Work While Studying in Norway
An foreign student holding a student residency permit in Norway is not permitted to obtain jobs. Students may however, apply for part-time permits or permits to obtain employment during vacations. In addition, full-time jobs can be pursued, albeit for a limited period of time.
Living Cost in Norway
Apparently, student living costs in Norway are on the high side. It includes lodging, books, and other materials, food and utilities for learning. Although the cost of living may be higher than the average for European countries, it is still among the best for a Nordic nation.
Some of the average cost of living for a foreign student for a month in some of Norway’s major cities, excluding accommodation costs, are;
- Oslo: 1,100 – 1,300 EUR
- Bergen: 950 – 1,050 EUR
- Tromso and Trondheim: 1,100 EUR
- Other smaller cities in Norway usually have an average monthly living cost of 700 – 800 EUR.
Accommodation for Students
Generally, for lodging in a private rental apartment, students pay a monthly average of EUR 1,500, including utilities. Accommodation prices in Oslo can for example, be up to EUR 1,700 per month.
Students search for housing in private residences and on campuses. Here are some of the average monthly costs of Norway’s housing;

- Students living with their spouses/children: EUR 787
- Students living in residence halls: EUR 564
How to Apply for a Residency Permit/Visa
You will need to start working on your visa once you have been granted admission to study in Norway. Before a visa is given to a prospective student, there are conditions that must be met, one of which is that the student can show evidence that he/she has enough funds to pay for his/her stay in Norway. In this situation, the Norwegian Embassy would need a minimum of NOK 90,800 to be transferred on your behalf to a Norwegian bank account to cover a 10-month academic year.
Please notice the distinction between a residency permit and a visa. A student visa enables you to remain in Norway for just 90 days, while a residency permit allows you to stay for more than three months. You will need to tender the following documents to apply for a residence permit;
- A student residence application form with a passport photograph
- A copy of a passport of you
- Documentation of admission to an accredited educational institution that must include the name, institution name, course of study and length of the course/program of the applicant
- A study budget that states the ability to pay for our studies

How to Apply for Admission into a Norwegian University
You may have to contact each university or college in order to obtain the correct application forms and information about the application deadlines. In general, for courses beginning the following autumn (August), the application deadline for international students is between 1 December and 15 March. Please notice that some organizations have separate deadlines for “pre-qualification” that are older than this. The majority of Norway’s schools support online applications.
Firstly, you can give the school an online application and then also forward supporting documentation to them. If you fulfill the minimum entry criteria for admission, a letter of offer will be sent to you to allow you to process your visa.

University Tuition Fees in Norway
Any public colleges don’t charge tuition fees in Norway. This extends to undergraduate courses, Master’s and PhD programs, and to students from all countries irrespective of whether or not they are EU/EEA members.
Students are required to pay full student union fees, which are about EUR 32-64.
