Founded in 2003, the University of Luxembourg has already built a reputation as being among the best young universities in the world. It was ranked 12th in the Times Higher Young University Rankings 2018, and 178th in the Times Higher World University Rankings 2016.

Studying at Luxembourg University

Studying at the University of Luxembourg is a uniquely enriching experience. The programmes impart cutting edge knowledge in a highly international, multilingual and distinctly interdisciplinary environment. Small classes ensure direct interaction between students and teaching staff.

Programs Offered

The University offers 14 Bachelor’s and 42 Master’s degrees, 16 lifelong learning courses and vocational training opportunities, as well as 4 doctoral schools. It draws on the knowledge of experts from the business community and international institutions who complement the academic staff to ensure highest-quality teaching. It collaborates with Luxembourg’s financial centre – one of the world’s leading centres – the European Court of Justice, the European Investment Bank and many more.

PhD in University of Luxembourg

Four doctoral schools offer custom-made training programs;

  • Doctoral School in Science and Engineering (DSSE)

Teaching at the University of Luxembourg is multilingual. The programmes are primarily bilingual (French/English or French/German), some are trilingual, and others are entirely taught in English.

The university offers many bilingual and multilingual study programs in French, English and German, as well as several master courses and doctoral schools entirely taught in English.

With 6,200 students from 120 countries and 250 academics from all over the globe, the university provides a cosmopolitan learning experience.

Moreover, all Bachelor’s students have to spend a mandatory semester abroad, reflecting the importance attached to mobility. The university therefore cooperates with nearly 90 partner universities worldwide.

Luxembourg University Scholarships and  Financial Aids

European Investment Fund Guarantee for Students

In cooperation with the European Investment Fund and under the auspices of the European Commission, the University of Luxembourg has put in place a special scheme to support students for specific programs; this scheme includes some of the following;

  • Faculty of Science, Technology and Communication (FSTC)
  • Master Professionnel en Sciences de l’Ingénieur – Efficacité Énergétique et Économique [15]
  • Master in Information and Computer Sciences
  • Master of Science in Engineering – Sustainable Product Creation [16]
    Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance (FDEF)
  • Master in Logistics and Supply Chain Management
  • Master in Wealth Management
  • Master in Entrepreneurship and Innovation
  • Master of Science in Banking and Finance

Within this supporting scheme, the university enables students to defer payment of some aspects of tuition fees or student housing during their master studies. This scheme is reserved to incoming master students at the University of Luxembourg who obtained a bachelor in a foreign university.

Scholarship by CEDIES

Financial assistance from the Luxembourg Government is granted through the CEDIES (Centre de Documentation et d’Information sur l’Enseignement supérieur) to all students who are enrolled for higher studies and fulfil one of the following conditions:

  • they have the Luxembourgish nationality or are family members of a citizen of Luxembourg and reside in Luxembourg;
  • they are nationals of a member state of the European Union, of the European Economic Area or of the Swiss Confederation and reside in Luxembourg as salaried worker or self-employed worker, as a person continuing to have this status or as a family member of one of the above-mentioned categories of residents, or have the status of permanent resident;
  • they are third-country nationals or stateless, have resided in Luxembourg for at least 5 years and hold a secondary school leaving certificate recognized by the Luxembourg Ministry of Education (Ministère de l’Education nationale et de la Formation professionnelle);
  • they have the status of a political refugee in Luxembourg and reside in Luxembourg;
  • they are children of a citizen of Luxembourg, a national of a member state of the European Union, of the European Economic Area or the Swiss Confederation working or carrying on his/her profession in Luxembourg for an uninterrupted period of at least 5 years and for at least 50% of the legal or contractual number of working hours.

This financial assistance from the government consists in principle of a loan and a scholarship at 2% fixed rate. It amounts to 13.000€ per academic year. It cannot be combined with possible financial aid obtained in the student’s country of residence.

In addition, enrollment fees up to a maximum amount of 3,700€ per academic year can be included.

Erasmus grant

If you study abroad at an institution beyond the Great-Region as an Erasmus student, you are awarded an Erasmus grant.

Mobility fund

If you are a bachelor student doing a study semester at an institution beyond the Great-Region as a non-Erasmus student,
you are eligible for a grant from the Mobility fund.

University of Luxembourg Tuition Fees

The enrollment fee is generally 400 euros in semesters 1 and 2 and 200 euros for all other semesters. (Special tuition fees for some Master programmes). The university has no additional tuition fees for foreign students.

Exceptional procedure due to the COVID-19 health crisis

In view of the exceptional situation, the University of Luxembourg has adapted its applications process.

With the admissions service working remotely, the University has set up a paperless applications system in order to ensure a smooth continuation of the applications processing.

Submitting applications by email: Applicants are invited to submit their complete application file by email to application2020@uni.lu according to the instructions described on their official website.

Application deadlines

The registration dates for non-EU candidates are extended: the deadline for online registration is 11 May (instead of 26 April). The deadline for submitting the file by email is 18 May (instead of 3 May).
