International students are being given fully funded scholarships by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). MIT is situated in Cambridge, Massachusetts and is one of the world’s finest universities. In 1861, because of the rapid industrialization that was happening in the United States, this private university was established.

With new factories emerging in every corner of this country, the United States was experiencing a boom in the industry. As a result, to meet the demand for new technicians, more engineers and scientists were established to design new factories and machines, and MIT was founded.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology witnessed a rapid growth into one of the best universities in the world since its establishment. It has produced many scientists and engineers who by making new discoveries, have pioneered the frontiers of science.

MIT is also considered the world’s most prestigious institution, a university that is respected by the majority of citizens worldwide.

The Institute of Technology of Massachusetts currently has nearly 11,000 students on its campus. Some 4,000 are undergraduate students, and 7,000 are graduate students. The number of foreign students at the Institutes of Technology of Massachusetts is also very high. There are 430 international undergraduate students and 2,873 international graduate students at MIT.

MIT Rankings

The worldwide MIT rankings are very high. It is ranked first in the global rankings according to QS World, a very credible ranking system. It is ranked as the second-best university in the world, according to Times Rankings. It is listed among the top ten best universities in the world in most rankings. So what do they mean by these high rankings?

Several things could mean it. First the name-value could have an influence on the world rankings because MIT is very prestigious. However in its high rankings, the quality of education obtained at MIT is the most significant factor. The challenging curriculum and the outstanding professors in the world rankings are the deciding factors.

MIT Tuition and Fees

Frankly, for both domestic and foreign students, MIT tuition and fees are rather costly. $49,580 a year is the MIT undergraduate and graduate tuition. Depending on the degree programs, the graduate tuition will be greater.

Room and board are also $14,210 a year for MIT, which is added to the tuition. For the majority of students, this high tuition, bed, and board is very costly.

MIT Scholarships (Undergraduate)

MIT provides foreign students with several need-based scholarships. The average needs-based MIT grants, for instance, were approximately $45,000 per year. 33 percent of all students attended MIT for free, and with no student loans, 72 percent of graduates graduated. These statistics suggest that MIT scholarships are fantastic for providing you with the means to study at MIT.

Sum of Scholarship

All MIT scholarships are need-based, which means that your particular family circumstances will depend on the amount awarded. MIT does not offer any merit grants to students and there is a great academic record for anyone who is admitted to MIT.

With one exception, foreign students who apply to MIT meet the same rules as domestic students. A test of English proficiency such as TOEFL needs to be submitted by international students. In these processes, I have broken down the application procedures for international students.

How to Apply for MIT Scholarships (Undergraduate)

For foreign students, applying for MIT scholarships is very straightforward. International students are not eligible for other financial funding, so they are not expected to complete the FAFSA. They are however, candidates for institutional scholarships, so the CSS Profile will have to be completed.

MIT Scholarships (Master’s and PhD)

For undergraduate students, financial assistance for all departments is very centralized. Financial assistance, however is provided to graduate students through individual departments. The application and financial aid documents are also different from those of each department. I will do my best to break down the application process for graduate international students in this segment.

Master’s students have many privileges, such as teaching assistantships, research assistantships, and fellowships. It is very common for PhD students to receive MIT grants that include full tuition, stipend, and health insurance for all of their years in this program.

Research Assistantships (RA)

  • Doctoral- $37,128 per year
  • Master’s- $33,924 per year

Teaching Assistantships (TA)

Graduate Fellowships

Graduate students would be eligible for either individual department or external agency awarded fellowships. In their financial plan, students who are accepted to the programs will be informed of any fellowship opportunities or obtain fellowships.
